About me
Krystal Colbert, 2023 Iowa Teacher of the Year, is a 2nd grade teacher at Mitchellville Elementary in the Southeast Polk School District. Krystal graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Early Childhood Special Education and a Reading endorsement. She earned her Master of Arts in Education from Viterbo University, and her Teacher Leadership Graduate certificate from Northwestern College. Throughout her 18 years in the classroom, Krystal has a long history of serving in various leadership positions, including mentoring new teachers, serving as a cooperating teacher for student teachers, planning and implementing professional devleopment for classroom teachers, and serving as a 7 Habits Lighthouse team member. In the classroom, Krystal prides herself on providing collaborative learning opportunities, celebrating student success, and instilling a growth mindset in her students. She and her husband, Jason, live in Altoona with their two children, Jamison and Emersynn.
